MediaTemple Grid Review

Thu, 25 Nov 2010

I've been a MediaTemple Grid customer for 1 year and 7 months now. Many web hosting reviews are unfair because the people writing them are only in it for the profit off of referrals, giving the best reviews for the hosts that pays them the best. Although I have a referral link below, I do not get money, but credit. And this is an honest review why I have stuck with MediaTemple. So I am not creating hype to try and build referrals, I use them myself, this is an honest MediaTemple Grid Review

(gs) Uptime

I've seen a lot of reviews complaining about the uptime with the (gs). Since that is a terribly important thing it should be taken serious, because if you have a website shopping cart, you could lose potential customers for any down time. Most of the complaints on the (gs) with downtime appears to be from 2 to 3 years ago, before I started using them. I've tracked my Grid Server for a few months with monitor.us, the uptime has been 100%, 100%, 99.9% and 99.8% at the lowest point so far.

(gs) Goodies

There is much more given to you than you will need, here are some of the features:

  • 100GB Storage
  • 1TB Network Transfer
  • Host up to 100 Domains
  • 1000 Email Accounts
  • LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP)

In my opinion 100GB of storage is too much, most of my websites are under 10MB. If I host large files, I store those on an Amazon S3 account and distribute them with Amazon CloudFront. Nevertheless, if you need this much space it's there.

Support

The support seems pretty good to me. However, I've only submitted 5 total support tickets in my lifetime with MediaTemple. The first time about a year ago took about 18 hours for a response. Lately in the past several months support responses have ranged from 30 minutes to 4 hours, it appears they've improved quite a bit, or perhaps I hit a bad day in the past.

Their support is very knowledgeable, they have answered my questions about Django, CNAMES Names, Multiple IP's, and SSL. Some of which I couldn't find in their Knowledge Base. I should mention their Knowledge Base has pretty good instructions by the way -- I setup an automatic backup to S3 by following instructions in their knowledge base.

Control Panel

One of the main reasons I chose MediaTemple is because of their Admin Panel. It sounds silly I know, but this is important to me. I got tired of CPanel, although CPanel was good I had a strong disliking to it. If I was forced to use another Control Panel other than MT's I would be okay with CPanel, but I'd prefer Plesk before that.
